Leonardo Sánchez
Born in 1995 in Mexico, Leonardo Sanchez is noted as one of the upcomingyoung latino american tenors of his generation.
Leonardo had the opportunity to collaborated with such conductors like Nello Santi, Fabio Luisi, Ottavio Dantone, etc. and stage directors like Renata Scotto, Barrie Kosky, Andreas Homoki, etc.
He was a member in the Zürich International Opera Studio, of which hewas the youngest fellow for the seasons 2018-2019 and 2019-2020.
He has recently graduated (2020-2022) and obtain his master degree by the Haute Ecole de Music in Lausanne, Switzerland under the guidance of the soprano Jeanne-Michelle Charbonett. Leonardo is equally a proud young ambassador for the renowned Opera For Peace project. He earned his bachelor’s degree in music in the Universidad De Las Americas in Puebla and was a member of the Estudio Nacional de la Ópera de Bellas Artes and the Taller de Perfeccionamiento Operístico SIVAM, where he received the Plácido Domingo scholarship from SIVAM, Mexico’s most prominent young artist opera program.
Leonardo's agenda for the 2023/2024 season includes: Tenor soloist in Mahler's symphonic work Das Lied Von der Erde at the National Concert Hall "Nezahualcoyolt" in Mexico City under the direction of Sylvain Gasançon. His debut at the Oviedo Opera in Spain in the role of Alfredo in Verdi's La Traviata. In France, his debut with the Orchestre National de Lyonat the Auditorium National de Lyon under the baton of Nikolaj Szeps-Znaider in Mozart's Così Fan Tutte. In Germany, his participation in the IMMLING Festival in Gounod's Romeo et Juliette in the title role, under the baton of Cornelia Von Kerssenbrock and his debut at the Carnegie Hall in New York as soloist in a gala of Mexican Music and Opera.
Last season highlights of his agenda were: Ismaele in Verdi’s Nabucco in the Immling Festival in Germany, main tenor role in the Zarzuela Doña Francisquita in Jerez, Spain, the Tenor Soloist in the Mahler 8thSymphony in Guanajuato, México and the role of Beppe/Arlecchino of the opera Pagliacci, in Malaga, Spain.
In recent years, Leonardo has made his debut in Italy at the Opera Giocosa in Savona and the Rieti Opera Festival, in which he took on the role of Alfredo Germont in “La Traviata”, sharing the stage with soprano Rosa Feola as Violetta. He has equally made his Spanish debut as Tamino in Mozart’s “Die Zauberflöte” in the Cadiz region, as well as Alberto in Breton’s “Farinelli” in Teatro de la Zarzuela in Madrid, where he returned in 2022 to perform the roleof Alzaga in the world premiere of the opera “The Magic Opal”. During the 2021-2022 season, he performed the role of Conte Almaviva in Rossini’s “Il Barbiere di Siviglia'' in Theater Winterthur, Switzerland, equally participating with Rolando Villazon in two Latin-American Galas in Geneva and performed in the role of Don Ottavio in Mozart’s “Don Giovanni'' during the Festival Internacional Cervantino in Guanajuato, Mexico.
In addition, Leonardo has received numerous prizes of prestigious singing competitions:
In 2022 he won the 1er PRIX of the Lavaux Classic Competition (the most important chamber music festival of the francophone Swiss Region) and the 1er Prix and the “Prix jeune public” in the 3rd edition of the Kattenburg Competition in the Lausanne Opera in Switzerland. During the same year he received the Nespresso Creativity Award as well for his graduation project: The Colors of Latin America, a musical album that homage the homeland of Leonardo.
In Mexico, he has been awarded with the Youth Revelation at the Sinaloa International Singing Competition in 2016 and First place, Opera de Bellas Artes Special Price and Youth Revelation in the Carlo Morelli National Singing Competition, a contest that has been won by singers such as Javier Camarena, Ramon Vargas or Rolando Villazon.
