Johannes Erath studied first violin in Vienna. He worked as an orchestra musician at the Volksoper Wien and the Orchesterakademie of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. Thereafter he decided to go toward directing. Among the early productions of Erath were Cendrillon in Bern, for which he received 2008 the Götz Friedrich Preis.

Further productions were Orfeo ed Euridice, Aida, Manon, Faust, L’amour de loin and Les Toyens at the Oper Köln, La Traviata and The Cunning Little Vixen at the Hamburg State Opera. In Graz Erath directed Lulu, Giovanni, Elektra, Lohengrin and Die Tote Stadt. Lohengrin was transferred to Oslo Opera, Die Tote Stadt was 2015 rewarded as the best production in Austria. He debuted in Frankfurt with Eötvös’ opera version of Angels in America, followed by Otello, Giulio Cesare, Euryanthe, Der Mieter, Krol Roger, Meistersinger von Nürnberg and Alcina. Le Nozze di Figaro was created at the Semperoper Dresden and revived at Savonnlina Festival. Les Contes d’Hoffmann opened first at the Semperoper, later at the Finnish Opera and Valencia Ballo in Maschera and I Masnadieri at Bayerische Staatsoper, Caruso a Cuba at the National Opera Amsterdam, La Vestale and Freitag, der 13. at the Theater an der Wien, Vissi d’arte, La Sonnambula and Septembersonate at Deutsche Oper am Rhein Düsseldorf, his creation of Crepuscolo dei Sogni at the Teatro Massimo Palermo and Make No Noise, Beatrice Cenci and Rheingold at the Bregenz Festival.

Last season he debuted at Staatsoper Berlin with Fin de Partie and at Volksoper Wien with Csardasfürstin. Therefor he was nominated for the International Opera
Award His production of Ermione at the Rossini Festival Pesaro won the Premio Abbiati for the best opera-production 24 in Italy.

After a new Faust in Valencia, which is a co-production with La Scala di Milano, Staatsoper Berlin and Madrid he will staged Maria de Buenos Aires in Düsseldorf,
Further productions will lead him to Tokyo, Berlin, Frankfurt, Rome…
